Suspect apprehended quickly after downtown assault in Courtenay

One youth is in custody after several people were assaulted downtown Courtenay this morning.

At approximately 9:00 a.m. Comox Valley RCMP received a report of a person assaulting people with a knife in front of the library in Courtenay. Thanks to the efforts of frontline officers and members of the public, the suspect was successfully apprehended within minutes.

The safety and well-being of our community remains our highest priority. We understand the concern this event may cause and we want to reassure the public that there is no ongoing threat said Insp. Scott Mercer, Officer in Charge of the Comox Valley RCMP. The quick response by members of the public and officers played a critical role in preventing any further harm today. He added.

Investigators are still in the area gathering evidence. Fortunately, there have been no reports of serious physical injuries. Comox Valley RCMP Victim Services is available to anyone affected by this incident.

The suspect, a youth, will remain in custody until their court appearance.
