2020-09-01 15:04 PDT
White Rock RCMP are reminding drivers that Thursday September 10th marks the beginning of the school year in White Rock. With the extended break from active school zones due to COVID- 19, police are asking motorists to be extra vigilant.
School zone speed limits are 30km/h are in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days. RCMP officers will be enforcing the two school zones in White Rock- Peace Arch Elementary in the 15800 block of Roper Avenue, and White Rock Elementary in the 1200 block of Fir Street. Speeding in a school zone is a minimum fine of $196.00 and three (3) points.
Officers on patrol found three students playing out side of Peace Arch Elementary- Landon, Elijah and Savannah, and asked them What safety tips would they like adults to remember to make the return to school better for everyone?
They had this to say:
Landon: No touching each other, keep your hands to yourself and don’t play tag
.
Elijah: wear a mask and stay socially distanced- 6 feet apart
Savannah: Drive slow by the school, obey the school zone signs
.
White Rock RCMP have these reminders for drivers:
Observe speed zones as children crossing the road on their way to and from school can easily get distracted and step into harm’s way. Due to the steps taken to ensure compliance with Covid-19 social distancing, recesses and lunches may take place at different times for smaller groups throughout the day and children may be out at unexpected times. Regardless of the time of day, police are encouraging drivers to slow down and pay particular attention in and near school zones.
