Drug impaired driver removed from White Rock streets

On the evening of December 9th, 2021, White Rock RCMP Officers were making regular patrols when one officer observed vehicle driving towards him on the wrong side of the street, in the 1300 block of Everall Street. The officer initiated a traffic stop, and the driver was tested roadside for alcohol impairment. The driver blew under the legal limit, however given his other physical symptomology an officer trained as a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) was asked to attend. The DRE evaluation consisted of:

sobriety tests;
taking clinical indicators (blood pressure, body temperature, pulse, etc.);
measuring pupil size in different lighting conditions.

At the conclusion of the drug evaluation, the DRE officer determined that the driver was impaired and that the impairment was a result of one or more category of drugs. The driver was given a demand to provide a bodily fluid sample (urine). Once toxicology results are returned, the driver may be charged under section 320.14 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The vehicle was impounded and the driver was served a 24 hour suspension.

Refusal to undertake the evaluation or quitting at any time will result in criminal charges that have the same, or greater, penalties as driving while impaired by alcohol. Failure to provide the sample will result in criminal charges that have the same, or greater penalties as impaired driving.
