Powell River RCMP investigate arson in the alley behind the Salvation Army Thrift Store

On April 4, 2024 at approximately 7:30pm, Powell River Fire Rescue responded to a couch fire in the alley way behind the Salvation Army Thrift Store on Alberni Street.

No one was injured, but the fire resulted in power being cut off to the entire block due to melted wires. The investigation is ongoing.

Powell River RCMP is requesting video surveillance from anyone in the area that may have captured the incident.

Large fir tree comes down onto Thunder Bay Street

On April 8 at 9:49am, Powell River RCMP received a report that a large fir tree had come down on top of Thunder Bay Street at the Beach Gardens Resort.

Police responded and determined that two trees had been intentionally cut with a chain saw. The first tree had been falled back onto the Beach Gardens property. The second, larger fir tree had been partially cut and it appeared an attempt at a wedge cut had been made to fall the tree toward the interior of the lot. The cut however was incomplete and the tree fell onto the highway during the wind storm.

The tree narrowly missed a truck that was driving along the highway. The driver stated, The tree came down directly in front of me, it missed my truck by only about two feet.

Luckily, no one was injured, however, This irresponsible and careless act put the public’s safety at significant risk commented Cst. Perry. Police determined that no other trees in the area had been cut.

The highway was closed for approximately one hour during which traffic was re-routed up Cariboo Avenue with the assistance of Larsen Towing.
